And the verdict is...

So, I found this list of books on a friend's blog (thanks, Becky!) and since I am an English teacher, and a self-proclaimed reading nerd, I thought it would be fun to see how many books I really haven't read. SO here's my list, and I hope you enjoy it.

"The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they’ve printed.
1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you love.
4) Strike out the books you have no intention of ever reading, or were forced to read at school and hated.
5) Reprint this list in your own blog so we can try and track down these people who’ve only read 6 and force books upon them! :)"

So, 27 books read, 10 books loved, 23 books I intend to read, and 10 books I don't intend to read, or hated when I did read them. Very interesting. I did better than I thought I would, but maybe not as well as a respectable English Major should do. Then again, there aren't a whole lot of American Lit books here, of which I am a huge fan...

  1. Okay, I've just gotta know, who made up this list in the first place? It has a bunch of books that somebody at some point decided were "classics", mixed in with a bunch of books that were recently popular or well-known, a bunch of books that I've never heard of but were probably deemed to be classics because of the author whom I had heard of, and then a bunch of books with titles and authors that I have never heard of (most of which were probably also deemed classics by some self-proclaimed authority).

Where did this seemingly-arbitrary list originate? Was it this Becky person, or did it come from somebody else?

  3. Joseph: Here's what I found out about your question: http://rabidpaladin.com/archive/2008/06/25/book-geek.aspx

will have your answer. So it's probably not a "real" thing, but what's the harm of playing the little game? And besides, no one claimed this was a list of classics.
